"Boycott EFNW" - MLP Convention Head goes on Twitter Rampage

Twitter users from around the world are calling for a boycott of Everfree Northwest today, after a series of over 100 tweets from the head of the convention, Kyle Elliott. Going by the Twitter handle "TheBigKyle1", the President of the Board that runs Everfree Northwest engaged in a dispute with fandom artist Midnight Premier who was removed from the staff of EFNW, following the situation at Crystal Mountain Pony Con. The resulting "turmoil" as the Vice Chair @ColeDaigneault described it, left the EFNW Executive team "shocked". They were not alone.

Midnight Premiere - MidPrem - was one of several vendors who pulled out of Crystal Mountain Pony Con following the firing of the head of vendor relations. Following the convention, she received word that she was removed from the staff of Everfree Northwest's art team "for no given reason".

Scott Kinnersley, who was on the Crystal Mountain Pony Con board, also serves as the chair of Everfree Northwest according to his own Twitter account. MidPrem sent messages to the board president of EFNW - "Big Kyle" - seeking an explanation for her removal from the staff.

"Scott took the events at CMPC as a reason not to trust me, which is not something I can really change (and there's not much I can do to prove I wasn't leaking information other than give my word)" Premiere wrote.

Kyle told MidPrem that she was removed because "Scott no longer trusts" her "to be privy to sensative [sic] information", but also claimed that it was not about her being suspected as a source of the leaks from CMPC.

Scott Kinnersley: center
Note: MidPrem has contacted us out of concern that showing Scott's face would result in him being bullied by readers. We will not be removing this image because he is a public figure who broadcasts himself often so his identity is not a private matter, but we believe it is worth noting that MidPrem has expressed this kind of consideration.

Kyle proceeded to tweet this text to MidPrem, which  was deemed by others to be "threatening", "bullying", and "disgusting".

It was speculated by some that this account may be a fake account made by someone who was impersonating Kyle. As for the authentication of this twitter account being the head of EFNW's parent company, there's several pieces of evidence. First, would be the fact that the official EFNW twitter account actively follows the account.

The accounts first follow is from the embattled con chair himself.

Second would be a few tweets from the vice-chair of the convention acknowledging the issue and asking for calm.

The account is new, which implies that Kyle created a Twitter account for this purpose. In the several hours after the initial tweets, the account sent 135 other messages to MidPrem and other Twitter users. These tweets were deemed by many accounts to be shocking and "unprofessional".

He told some concerned parties that they were "not welcome at EFNW", and told others "Don't come" while repeatedly claiming that those raising concerns about the situation and his handling of it were "abusive" and "bullies".

Meme created during the exchange

Kyle's cries of "abuse" and "bullying" stem from his assertion that MidPrem did not honor a purported agreement made to wait 1 week for an answer from Scott as-to the justification of her removal before going public with her concerns. MidPrem holds that there was no agreement, rather a suggestion.

The public argument drew the attention of many, some of which proceeded to call for a boycott of Everfree Northwest in 2019. The tweets even caused some EFNW staff to respond. One design team member wrote "count me out" and "I don't know if it will make it past 2019".

Horse News attempted to get an official statement from Everfree Northwest and the Vice Chair.

The EFNW Twitter Account said this:
"Our Exec team is honestly shocked by the events of the past several days. There's a great deal of recovery and correction to be done. We'll have an official, professional, response before long."

The Vice President said this:

"For the time being, EFNW is unable to give an official response. I understand that that is not a satisfying answer. Please believe me that it is not at all satisfying for me either. Right now all of our Department Heads are working hard to address things internally, and we're humbly asking for the community's patience while we work things out.

There will definitely be a public official response from us in the near future. I sincerely apologize but it really will need to wait, hopefully no more than a few days. Thanks for your understanding.

Thank you for your patience and thank you for reaching out."

It's unclear at this time what, if anything will happen as a result of Kyle's actions.

See how the scrolly bar goes all the way to the top? Yeaaaah there's nothing else up there.

Editor's Note: Midnight Premiere was never one of our sources for the CMPC article. In fact, our first direct communication from her came on September 15th, over a month after the initial post. Anyone who believes she was involved in our coverage in any way is a fucking idiot.

We've attached a number of the associated screencaps below.

***NOTE: THIS IS STILL AN ONGOING STORY AND SUBJECT TO CHANGE AS MORE INFORMATION COMES IN***

How indeed.

Update 26.09.2018: Everfree Northwest has released an official statement, which can be read in full by the following links. We have also copy and pasted it in full below.[Original][Archive]

As promised, the executive team for Everfree Northwest 2019 would like to publicly address recent events involving our convention. We sincerely appreciate the community’s patience while we (continue to) work through this internally. We’re dedicated to continue providing a safe, welcoming, and magical convention.

We know people are upset, and we are actively working to reconcile directly with those involved. We understand the community is passionate about this (a good thing!), but it's much easier to resolve these issues directly with affected parties instead of publicly on Twitter. And to that end, we want to acknowledge our own part and mistakes.

This issue began as a private staffing matter when Scott/Thornwing, the Everfree Northwest 2019 Chair, removed an artist from design staff after consulting with executive and design department management. The artist was understandably upset upon receiving notice of the decision to remove them from staff. Without receiving an immediate response to a different email inquiry, the artist took to Twitter to voice their concerns in public. This action was followed soon after by questions sent to the @EverfreeNW Twitter account asking for information concerning the board of directors of Pegasi Northwest, the 501(c)(3) company that manages Everfree Northwest. Kyle Elliott, the President of the Board of Pegasi Northwest, made contact with the artist and certain arrangements concerning the matter were discussed. Very soon after that meeting, the parties involved split in disagreement on how things should proceed. The situation escalated in the public view as Kyle fiercely defended the convention and its staff. Many things were said on all sides of the argument both in public and through Twitter direct messages to Kyle, including anti-semitic slurs, intentional lies and half-truths, and even a death threat. The response to those posts resulted in issuing of attendance bans.

As a rule, we only ever ban people for egregious violations of our Code of Conduct, and we can assure the community that "mass bannings" will not be happening. If you are wondering if you have been banned, it is more than likely that you have not been. Due to the inherently private nature of individual attendance bans, we do not maintain a public “ban list”, and we will refrain from commenting on these issues publically. If you are personally unsure about your standing with the event, please contact us at chairs@everfreenw.com. Out of respect for each individual’s privacy, we cannot respond to third-party inquiries about whether specific people have been or may be banned.

Another factor to recognize is that while confronting this issue, Kyle has been dealing with critical health complications due to his diabetes this past week leading up to his hospitalization and diagnosis that his deteriorating condition contributed to his volatile mood. In other words, he was already under immense medical stress when all this happened, and he regrets that those complications may have affected the situation in any way.
Additionally, subsequent attempts to further mediate and reconcile privately with involved parties are currently stalled by the individual’s hesitance to discuss the matter further. In the current state, we are open to further talks to resolve as much as we can.

We value every individual involved with Everfree Northwest, be they VIP, community guest, vendor, artist, attendee or staff. Not only is everyone welcome, but everyone is important. Putting on an amazing event for our community is our number one priority. Everfree Northwest would not be the same without the dedicated vendors, staff, and attendees that support us each year.

While there were good intentions and mitigating medical circumstances underlying the initial blow-up, we still acknowledge our role in this and ask for forgiveness as the entire Everfree staff moves forward with our mission of bringing Equestria to Earth for Three Days. We hope to see you in May!

Signed,
The Everfree Northwest 2019 Executive Team

Update 27.09.2018 - Kyle has since then released an apology letter, due to the communities backlash of the initial one from Everfree Northwest itself. [Original][Archive]

I am sorry.

I have been dedicated to supporting Everfree Northwest for many years now. I am currently the President
of the Board of Pegasi Northwest, and I oversee all of the financial aspects of the convention as well as
appoint the Convention Chair. This does not give me the right to act the way that I did, and does not
excuse my actions. There are no excuses for the way I behaved. I want to take full responsibility for
everything that has resulted from the way that I lashed out at members of our community, and I apologize
for letting rage guide my actions and responses to people seeking answers.

Again, I am sorry. I humbly ask forgiveness for my mistakes.

I want to make it clear that throughout all of this, everyone on my team, including Scott, tried to talk sense
into me, but I would not listen. It took time for me to cool off, step back, and see the damage that I
caused. Now it’s time for me to attempt to make things right.

No one deserves to be treated the way I spoke to members of our artist and vendor community. No one
should or will be banned from attending Everfree Northwest for taking any part in this. After reviewing my
actions, I know that I went overboard in my defense of Scott. I was blindsided by anger, and used my
position of power to make impulsive attendance bans. These are all invalid. To demonstrate this, our
team will not enforce any of these bans (even if they came from legitimate violations of our Code of
Conduct), in an effort to move past all that has happened. Simply put, no one will be banned for any
actions taken in relation to this matter.

I will not be stepping down from my position as President of the Board at this time... but in days to come,
it will be a consideration I will be pondering with the same fervor these actions were taken with. For now,
however, I will return to my place behind the scenes managing the convention’s finances, and let the
executive staff of Everfree Northwest do what they do best. I have also deactivated my Twitter account
permanently.

Furthermore, we are in the process of establishing bylaws to separate duties between board and
convention authority and power, thereby creating a stronger check and balance system.

Please have faith in Everfree Northwest - it is a good and honest convention full of dedicated volunteers. I
ask that you not let my mistakes reflect poorly on the convention or its staff and executives. I hope that
the community can forgive me and look forward to Everfree Northwest 2019 with excitement and
optimism.

I apologize for my actions and humbly ask for forgiveness. Please allow me to grow and learn from this
mistake by giving me a second chance.

Sincerely,

Kyle Elliott
President of the Board
Pegasi Northwest

  9. Just to recap. Thornwing himself didn't ruin CMPC. It was a group effort between him and the conheads and their close friends that they put into important director positions within the con with no experience other than having been a volunteer at comic con.

It's been proven that they all made the worst possible decisions since the beginning of the convention and they refused to let people go that shouldn't have been in certain positions. They also refused to step down and let people who had actual knowledge of the fandom and how to properly run a convention. This year was just one bad decision after another and while a few well meaning people on staff tried their best to save the con which included people more qualified to run the con itself the conheads and Thornwing were responsible for killing CMPC once and for all.

The part that should scare people the most is that Thornwing openly bragged about being able to get people banned from cons right after he had Stephen Wintre fired. His actions have now resulted in multiple people being removed from EFNW. It's only a matter of time before they find themselves removed from other cons. EFNW basically supports all of this. Regardless of what their senior staff says the fact that they allowing this to continue speaks volumes about where they stand.

Thornwing and Big Kyle are dangers to the community and to the convention scene in general. Look at how much power they have. Look at how well they know any of the VIPs.

The only mention of the situation as a whole that I've seen has been a "Keep Calm" statement in the announcements channel from the vice-chair, it has not been discussed at all in the off-topic/general/etc. chats.

    4. EFNW and EFN weren't actually all that closely connected. The only reason EFN covered 2013 was because arrangements were made too late for PVL to show up. PVL covered 2014 and EFN didn't show up to do filming. By 2015 both were either out or getting out of the con coverage game.

Cons that are/were in EFN's pocket include:
      - Sweet Apple Acres Con (whose banning of PVL prompted their eventual undoing)
      - BronyCon (whose head of PR has been KryptonLogic, a former EFN-ite, for years, and who gave EFN a $9,000 fully-exclusive contract to cover BC '13 that included flight and board ON TOP OF the $9k cash package)
      - EQLA (not the older Karen Padilla one, the newer one, whose chair Caycifish was a part of the Brony Clubhouse, an EFN subsidiary, and whose head of PR, Kiniro, said on Twitter that he was explicitly using his con position to exact revenge on old grudges)
      - MLP-MSP (chaired by EFN's Final Draft) and Ponyville Ciderfest (which he was heavily involved with)

Cons that were friendly with PVL/HN included all years of Nightmare Nights Dallas (RIP), BABSCon '14/'15, BronyCAN, Fiesta Equestria, Brony Fan Fair, TrotCon, etc.

This has been your daily dose of Media Wars history. I SEEN SOME STUFF, MAN.

    5. Corrections since I can't edit posts:
      - EFN didn't just cover '13 because PVL didn't show up, that was just the only reason it wasn't *exclusive* coverage. They would've let us show up too.
      - Fiesta Equestria '13 was divided perfectly in half between EFN and PVL, literally with one co-chair signing the EFN contract and the other signing the PVL one. We even split the same router! EFN had a spotlight on their camera, which is why their video made the world-famous FE concert Cringe Compilation instead of ours. FE asked for years to have that taken down but EFN refused citing huge page views, until copyright eventually got 'em anyway.

Also, a few thoughts about this situation:

      - The whole reason MidPrem got canned in the first place appears to be as the result of some Trump-esque hunt for "the leaker" who sent stuff to HN and made CMPC look stupid. It was about bruised egos from day one. Now, not only has EFNW's reputation gone up in flames, but you didn't even get the leaker! It wasn't MidPrem! HOPE IT WAS WORTH IT!

      - Big Kyle is unqualified to be affiliated in any way whatsoever with any LLC's leadership. The fact that he has EFNW over a barrel, forcing them now to choose between throwing him under the bus or keeping their bankroller, is the ultimate in manchild slappyfights. I hope he sees this and bans me from EFNW too because I can't afford to go anyway.

      WAR NEVER CHANGES!

  13. One of the things I've always hated about the convention circuit was that you had two different kinds of conventions. Those conventions disconnected and operated mostly by people of their own accord and the bigwig conventions that are pretty much all headed by a small group of individuals. If nothing else this is no surprise to me.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I'm honestly shocked people still volunteer for this event after my personal experience of disrespect this con has shown its staff. I feel people were quick to point to others as the sources of issues, but the culture of disrespect that EFNW has is the type of culture that trickles from the top down. I'm glad to see Kyle finally showing his real colors and facing the consequences of it.

    ReplyDelete
  15. As someone who has worked the convention for several years I can say that when it comes to the very top people at EverfreeNW respect barely given. The chairs have always been 50/50 with one half being amazing and listening to staff like the vice chair is this year. The other half, like Thornwing, tends to throw their 'power' around and act like they're the greatest thing since sliced bread.

That being said, the rest of the staff, Directors and below are amazing, hard working people who just want the show to be the best it can possibly be while the higher ups sit there and do their best to run the show like a dictatorship. I'm just glad a previous chair is no longer in power. They were almost as bad as Scott can be.

Cole deserves utmost respect from the community. He is a hard worker who cares about everyone around him.

The show is in a good spot. Any money it receives from attendee's does NOT go into the pockets of Thornwing or Kyle. It is a 501(c)(3) organization that takes the money and can only use it to support itself or donate its money to a charity. So going to Everfree does not support Kyle.

I can guarantee that even with the problems within the staff the show will be amazing. They've pulled off a few years that should not have happened and attendee's were none the wiser. It's just unfortunate this situation became public and an explosion occurred.

  21. The EFNW executive team's response is such a dumpster fire it's not even funny. It absolutely REEKS of whoever wrote it being held at gunpoint by Kyle and forced to write something that said "all sides" were to blame, like some Trump press conference.

I think on page 2 of chapter 1 of "How to Handle PR Disasters" there's a line about not letting a community's anger boil over for a week, only to give some half-assed response that blames the people who were upset for being upset in the first place.

The worst part, though? They didn't just lay blame at the feet of the vendors who were upset in the first place, they implied that the only reason bans were handed out was for severe ToS violations like "anti-semitic slurs" and "even a death threat", and that they were all deserved. I get the feeling that the one single most fucking stupid thing you could do to piss off those vendors right now would be to suggest that they *deserved* their bans and to lump them in with people spewing hateful shit.

No doubt, some of the HN crowd probably did send some nasty shit Kyle's way. That happens like every time a HN article is written about almost anybody. The vendors didn't have a damn thing to do with that, besides having been banned.

Also, we all really should've gone easy on poor Kyle, because he was in the hospital dealing with diabetes. This was made evident by all of his tweets about being hospitaliz--oh wait, NOPE, literally the only thing he did on Twitter was spew angry manchild bullshit at anyone within earshot. He never said ONE WORD about being diabetic or being in the hospital, and not even here does he apologize for what was obviously inappropriate behavior.

Explaining that some disease "made you" do something without simultaneously apologizing for how stupid that thing was is classic abusive tactics. It's this awful combination of "it's not my fault, the disease made me do it" and "look what you made me do".

Kyle, I don't want you to kill yourself. It sucks that you deal with diabetes and you were in the hospital.

But holy shit, dude, you dug a HUGE hole for this convention and lurking over the shoulder of whoever wrote that awful response only dug it deeper.

Maybe con-running isn't your cutie mark.

If we're talking about the shitty excuses people use to try to squirm out of personal responsibility, Purple Tinker was the very first to try it with 'help I'm too mentally ill and trans to function', and people ripped her apart for how she abused her staff. Diabetes in hospital is a much better excuse, but I sense it's the same bullshit-itis that affected them both.

It's still sad that she's the only con-runner who will go down in history for being such a monumental fuckup, it seems like Big Kyle would be a similar story of a con-runner destroying their own reputation with hubris and adult tantrums.

If a person is physically or emotionally compromised they should have enough brains to step down from whatever responsibility they have BEFORE going nuts and damaging the reputation of their site/community/convention/etc. and causing a PR disaster such as this. While I do wish for the best for their health it isn't doesn't give any PR points for letting them go around unchecked.

    4. To be blunt thats not how it works, a lot of the con-chairs job is delegating to the other departments, but they by no means just sit there and do nothing. Its a very stressful job, and it dont just start at the con, these people work hard all year to put these things together. Yes without the staff there wouldnt be a con, but we also need our captain at the helm. They also have s good deal to do with the relations between the convention and the talent agents for events like this, and a lot of times start the talks getting these people in. Chairs frankly do everything from PR to marketing, talent relations and so much more then people realize to get these events going smoothly. I have been a vice chair in the past at non pony cons, and its a heck of a big job thats hard to really understand if you have not done it before your self.

  22. They're trying hard to sweep this all under the rug. Stay tuned for a "big announcement" that's meant to get everyone to forget about all of this. Probably some combination of special guests. They're going to throw all the money they can around to try and bury this.

And everyone WILL forget about it.

  23. They're claiming they made an "important breakthrough". Not sure what they mean but they better hope for a miracle at this point.

    1. Like Anon said. The "miracle" will be that they just so happen to have such a killer lineup announced for this year that everybody will forget about everything. Like CMPC they'll spend every last dime on the biggest names possible. But unlike CMPC who barely had anything to their name EFNW has a lot more thanks to Big Kyle and Thornwing.

    2. My bad. Missed that anon.

Anyway Kyle's twitter has been deleted. Maybe Kyle got convinced to step down? Or is the breakthrough they found a black hole they can dump this into.

  24. The breakthrough is an actual apology: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1IWbRE2iJ1PsixrLphfgnCxIvHF8OmImZ/view

  25. THE BREAKTHROUGH IS THE APOLOGY LMAO

Okay, so now let's start over. Kyle and Scott are still in their respective leadership positions, Scott has still fired MidPrem because he's on this "mole hunt" and doesn't give two shits about her years of selfless convention service if it doesn't make him look good...

...except now all those vendors who got banned THEN lumped in with anti-semitic comments and death threats aren't banned.

I'll bet they CAN'T WAIT to sign up for a badge.

    1. It's as if all that criticism went over his head. Sure, he feels sorry for what he did, and all the people he pissed off. He just crossed his fingers and promised to never do it again.

Maybe if the other board members had more of a spine, they could pressure him into resigning, and he'd actually feel another emotion: shame. Right now it's pretty clear he's just upset that he got caught being a manipulative jerk, and is telling people what they want to hear.

    2. I had a feeling it'd play like this. I knew Kyle wouldn't step down since he funds the con and Scott will still plug his ears and act like he did nothing wrong and hide behind Kyle if needed.

  26. The apology is fine, but is something actually going to be done about the problem that sparked all of this? Will there be a proper and satisfying answer for MidPrem, who by all means deserves enough to at least let people know that it has been sorted out?
Otherwise it's back to square one. We probably don't need to know the details, but nothing has been solved unless MidPrem gets a suitable response over being fired.

  27. I've never been a fan of Scott, and though this isn't all on him, I'm not at all surprised it started with him. He's the absolute #1 reason I didn't go to EFNW2018, and had no intention of returning for EFNW2019.
regardless of his ties to VAs, or whatever else he supposedly brings, he's full of lies. He runs the con by playing favorites, telling outright lies and keeping secrets. I'm surprised to see this from Kyle, but maybe I shouldn't be given what I have seen from the chairs over the years. You are most like the people you spend the most time with, after all.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Honestly, Kyle's apology feels like it's forced compared to how he was acting a week ago. Blaming all that shit on diabetes? Really? No one's going to believe that. I get the feeling that the rest of EFNW put him up to it or something. Wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't really written by him at all.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Wow. I thought EFNW was better than this. The only appropriate solution is for Kyle to step down as President of the Board of Pegasi Northwest. He can remain as the accountant, as that doesn't require him interacting with anyone outside the con, but he should not be a chair.

If he's really sorry, and he wants EFNW to recover from the monumental damage he's done, he will resign as president. "Sorry" only does so much against his actions, which do include abusing his position as president. Nobody will trust the con as long as he's in charge.

  30. I have been a staff member for Everfree since before the convention even started in 2012, I have gotten to know the men involved in this incident some better then others. But frankly things have gone way to far, and not just on Everfree's part. This Boycott over Everfree for this BS is part of what will destroy this fandom, lets destroy one of the last ponycons out there, and then complain when there are no more. The convention has ran successfully for many years now, we have had our ups and downs, but frankly this stuff is no worth destroying something many of us have worked so long and hard to bring to you fans. Everfree, Scott and Kyle have myself and my teams full support, and frankly would go through hell again for them if it came down to it. The drama this fandom can come up with is frankly incredible sometimes, and its going to be ourselves that end our own fandom because of it. Embrace the message and the morals of the show you claim to be a fan of, and stop acting like children. You dont like the con, dont come, but if you do as before we will bring to you a show you wont forget.

    1. At the end of the day the fandom will have to decide if it's better to have conventions run by people who shouldn't be in their positions or to have one less convention in the fandom. They can vote with their wallets.

And even if Everfree disappears after next year there will still be other fan conventions. Get off your high horse.
