I'm not 100% sure about BronyCon but the lead staffers who mutually followed me on Twitter kind of had that cliquish/egotistical vibe about them.

I always said the old guard is what's killing the con over the years. And now they have voted to actually end it without seeing what the tight knit community around it wants to see.
Which I agree. I see no problem with a BronyCon 3.0 as long as people are happy and the convention has something fresh. It isn't going to be the early con where it was merely a hundred people.
While I also agree the old guard isn't helping there are plenty of factors that go into the convention's decline. I could see BronyCon remaining a stagnant three to four thousand people for many years to come as long as it's balanced as such. Many conventions (including Fiesta Equestria that I've staffed for three years) tend to be built upon making it huge quick rather than realizing a lot of people would only go once and accept they've had their fill of the pie.
Officially I've left the fandom last year but still keep tabs just to learn just in case I jump into a similar fandom. To me, bronies don't seem to be the marketable type. The only people willing to go to BronyCon are those that already have a vested interest. So if those who joined the fandom when it was 'mainstream' in 2012 are finally moved on there's no way to boost the attendee count either.
I might of gone off tangent with the 'staff needing help' part, whoops.
The best I can come up with is that most of these conventions are built to try and promote tourism rather than cater to the local bronies. I don't believe 10,000 bronies live in the Baltimore area. That being said that door swings in both directions. We're looking at trying to get both attendees AND volunteers to try and go.
