A few days ago, it was announced that Midwest Media Expo - an annual geek convention that attracts thousands of media fans to Detroit, and the sister convention of the wildly popular Youmacon - was CANCELLED, a mere 3 days before the start of the con. It was speculated at the time, but now essentially confirmed that it was the hotel venue who suddenly cancelled the convention's contract.
This is widely regarded as a dick move and has since earned the hotel the scorn of hundreds of pissed-off displaced congoers (the hotel's Facebook page is now a mere 1.6 out of 5 Stars).
But Good News everyone! From the ashes of M2X comes "NotCon 2017", a "fan appreciation event" taking place at the Radisson Hotel Detroit-Farmington Hills.
Some of the guests who were booked for the convention Jon St. John and David Eddings will be in attendance and word on the street is that it's FREE to the public.
More details below
"Hello everyone. If you have not yet heard, due to the last minute cancellation of our contract by the Edward Hotel, the Midwest Media Expo has had to postpone it's event. We have been able to relocate to a newer venue, and are hosting an event for the community in it's place. What we have for you is 3-day event starting tomorrow, and the great part: we are bringing you our day festivities for free.
More as it develops
The support that the community has shown us over the past few days has been amazing and we want to give you all a great event. We have guests, programming, vendors, cosplay gatherings and more, all lined up for you. The event page and the Midwest Media Expo page itself will be updating with information as it arrives.
There will be some ticketed events for the evenings (concerts and dances), but everything else is on the house. Evening special programming is provided at no cost to those who pre-registered for M2X.
Hotels are going fast, please check out our page for details. Thank you again, one and all. We look forward to seeing you this weekend."
From the Event Page:
"The cancellation of this year's M2X event by the venue was a hard blow for us. The community support has been amazing these past few days, and we would like to thank everyone for their understanding. We haven't been idle, and we were able to make arrangements with fantastic folks at the Radisson in Farmington Hills so we can still bring something special to you.
Several guests will still be joining us, including Jon St. John and David Eddings, and more to be announced. There will be panels and autograph sessions, cosplay photographers (and all of the cosplay gatherings are, of course, invited), and more. LOTS of details to come.
Oh, one last thing. All of our daytime festivities are totally free. And if you're looking for a hotel to crash at, the Radisson has offered us some rooms at a crazy low rate. So come on down, you know where the party is at.
#NotCon2017"
Bad news, good news, and OMG! Our fans are the best fans ever!
So, bad news, the Radisson is sold out for the weekend. GOOD NEWS, they stepped it up again and have already arranged a block of rooms at the same rate at the Comfort Inn Farmington, right across the street from the Radisson. Call asap before they fill up too! 248.471.9220
Thank you everyone for already making our NotCon an event to remember!
