Furry Infiltration of MLP Complete; Anthro Cat Announced for Movie

Today we got a bunch of character designs revealed for this year's movie. While the designs ranged from CRAAAAAAAWLING to qt, one in particular touched a nerve in the fandom: Taye Diggs' character, an anthropomorphic cat named "Capper."

Almost immediately, the fandom jumped on this seemingly out-of-place addition to the franchise. Worrying that it would just make it look even more appealing to furries, some already claimed that the movie was "ruined forever" when combined with the two edgy characters. Others pointed out some similar characters in fiction:
His most direct inspiration, from British sci-fi sitcom Red Dwarf?

At least they followed the rule
And then Hasbro got sued
Some have pointed out that a cat species existed in G1, with characters like Katrina. However, this did not quiet concerns of an ill-fitting species into the movie, or attracting furries. Given February's tendency to continuously erupt in drama, we can only guess what will come next.

M.A Larson wasted no time in letting CapperGeneral know, and his response was pretty much what anyone in his position would make.

And here we have a bunch of other actors and characters that are due to be in the movie. Make of these what you will, and fire up those fanfictions and doomsday prophecies, because it's happening!

Clockwise from top left: Tirek's OC, Shadow the Pony, New Fish Waifu, and >anthro

  1. We already had an anthro cow, should've expected that other furtrash weren't far behind.

    1. what cow? Are you drunk and imagining things again?

    2. Yeah all the cows in the show before season 3 were perfectly sentient (sapient, whatever).

  3. If it attracts Furries than fine, more success at the box office. As long as it has that same team of writers and overall production crew behind it I have faith that the movie is in good hands.

Besides, most Bronies are more or less Furries anyway.

    1. I heard Megan McCarthy is writing the film (and yeah, bronies practically = furries, only bronies are more towards horses/ponies).

      Delete
    2. She's going to ruin the film and it will be a disaster.

      Delete
    3. Isn't she considered one of the best writers of the show though? She's not like Josh Haber/Nick Confaltane (sorry if I misspelled the name), or comics wise, the terrible fanfiction writers Jeremy Whitley and Christina Rice.

      Delete
    4. No, she's the worst writer of the show. Amy Keating Rogers and M. A. Larson are the best writers of the show before they been bullied by McCarthy, Vogel and Hasbro.

      Delete
    5. She's not the only writer. Rita Hsiao is doing it with her.

      Delete
    6. @Unknown

I do not know who she is.

  4. If there's one thing furries are good at (besides being gay), it's porn.

And I won't say no to a lot of quality clop for this movie.

  5. "Capper"? Shit, I thought it was going to be Katrina, guess it was just wishful thinking. :(

Though I'm not a member of both fandoms, I say furries are better among the two groups anyway, and I agreed with this stamp (but disagree with #2 because both groups have produced amazing artwork): http://procrastinatingstill.deviantart.com/art/Originality-over-Uncreativity-384092581

And yeah, like what that stamp said, it's stupid how bronies were whining about furries on FURaffinity, there's a reason it's called that and not "Bronyaffinity!!" Then again, most bronies are arrogant anyways, thinking their fandom is the best one ever and any other one is an enemy.

Also, on a side note, the only new character who looks interesting is Princess Skystar.

    1. They probably didn't go with "Katrina" again for reasons which should be obvious.

    2. I don't think it's wise to compare bronies with furries. The fandoms are completely different at their core and the only similarities are both sets of characters fall within the realm of anthropomorphism and both fandoms are incredibly open about one's inner feelings. I will admit though, the lack of fragmentation of the brony fandom's core tends to make said stereotypes easy to confirm. That being said I accept the challenge and since I don't use dA I'll post my remarks here. Numbers are for splitting points and not tied to the stamp in general.

      1. Most people forget the reason why that stamp makes sense is because the fragmentation of the brony fandom easily splits it into what IS is the fandom and what is not. Despite me being on the train for six years many websites I am a part of are not considered a part of the fandom at all, despite it being MLP.
      2. Each fandom does have its central hub. Both fandoms are equally responsible for supporting the erosion of their own hubs. EQD and FA are equally problematic the only difference is that the latter can easily be a colossal time sink.
      3. I think arrogance on BOTH sides only makes the argument harder to hold. Reading the description of the stamp as well as the whole 'X is better' tends to reinforce the fact that all fandoms are built upon ungodly amounts of narcissism.
      4. To me, I think the term anthropomorphism has been long since degraded similar to how I know people who define role playing solely on the length of the post rather than the quality of the post (i.e. literate role players who have no basic spelling whatsoever). A lot of us would probably define it as a bipedal creature rather than a talking animal. Granted, my bias is that I would probably use a slight species variation of my alma mater but still retail its quadruped form if I were to ever go that route. With as little of furry stuff that I see online I don't see a whole lot of quadruped stuff (that is, quadruped of a fully grown animal).
      5. I'm pretty sure in 20 years the brony fandom will be at the point that we'll destroy hotels and leave our undergarments all over the convention floor. In the convention scene furries are much wilder than bronies which is why I've kind of dropped the idea of finishing up my research. Conventions are hard enough as it is these days.

tl;dr - Saying that bronies could use improvement and avoiding the word 'better' would make your argument worthwhile. Being a donkey is probably ill-advised on Horse News.

      Delete
    3. I actually didn't do the stamp, I was more basing my thoughts on it, but I can agree with your points. About the arrogance, true, you're right, that's a thing I've found out about anime fanbases, they try to say what they like is better.

I see it more a bipedal animal also.
I do agree, I've read that bronies can be more calmer at conventions than furries (I feel bad for the hotel staff that had to deal with those wild guys and the regular non-furry people at the hotel).

I'd also say from my experience both fanbases do have their bright spots despite their dark sides. Hopefully bronies will improve (didn't mean to act like a donkey and if I did I apologize).

      Delete
    4. It took me a few tries to try and not put any possessives. I know you didn't make the stamp. Anime is one of those things that I know nothing about.

Honestly, I don't think bronies will improve. It would take some drastic measures that people probably will not do, so I'm just gonna hold on to the ride until it ends.

      Delete
    5. That's a shame they might not improve...

I'm just going to stay with the good fans I know of.

      Delete
    6. Fam, you literally just described furries in your original comment, not bronies. Remember the shitstorm that went down when the FA staff dared to have a pony-themed banner way back when? Furries are renowned for being so toxic and hostile towards other fandoms that it borders on hilarious (considering how hypocritical it is when they whine about how "attacked" and "fursecuted" their own fandom is).

      http://forums.furaffinity.net/threads/obligatory-banner-thread-denial-is-magic.107470/

Swing it whatever way you like, the furry fandom is a horrible one and historically has always been hostile to bronies, so bronies have every right to be leery of furries swamping the fandom.

      Delete
    7. Yikes...

Like I said somewhere else, sadly I think that's the case with a lot of fandoms, they tend to be hostile towards other fandoms (LOL, "fursecuted?" What a horrible pun! :P)

I stay away from both fandoms really and just look at what some artwork's like, out of curiosity mostly.

      Delete
    8. Don't get me wrong, bronies have done their fair share of crappy stuff too (what fandom hasn't?), and we were certainly obnoxious back in the heyday of the fandom - but furries have historically been openly and unabashedly hostile towards bronies, so as far as I'm concerned bronies are justified in their suspicion of furries coming along and trying to infest their fandom.

      Delete
    9. I can understand.

I'm actually taking back what I said about that stamp I linked, I don't agree with what they said, especially with artwork, the brony fanbase has produced amazing artwork and that's one thing about the fandom I do like.

It looks like the obnoxiousness from bronies seem to have died down mostly now, but I may be wrong...or I might have only come across the bright spots.

    10. This entire comment chain is hilarious. Anyone who thinks there's a major difference between furries and bronies is being silly. The differences are minor. The overaching concept is the same. The only difference is furries have been around longer and show interest in a wide variety of sources in regards to anthropomorphic art whereas bronies focus on MLP and EQG to a lesser extent.

There's zero reason for anyone in either fandom to give each other shit. I'm a member of both communities as are a lot of people. The last thing either needs are more gatekeepers. Being hateful towards people in a different fandom is as stupid as nationalism.

      Delete
    11. True on that (sorry if I was acting silly and such).

    1. How can you tell? Considering how in my opinion the show's gone downhill and such, and people are leaving the fanbase more and more, that could be a possibility (decrease in toy sales and such)...I have a feeling "Power Rangers" might smash it to nothing also, it really depends though, we'll have to wait and see...

      Delete
    2. I don't think it will flop. I do think it was stupid of them to have it open the day Blade Runner's sequel is premiering.

      Delete
    3. It will be a flop, Roofuffy. Like Hasbro did to Jem and the Holograms.

    4. Plus the movie's being distributed by LionsGate. They were able to take a high quality film like Shaun the Sheep Movie and turned it into a box office failure (at least stateside). I doubt they'll do anything better with the My Little Pony Movie, even if turns out to be good.

      Delete
    5. Shaun the Sheep didn't do well in the US because that series doesn't play over here. That's like expecting the MLP movie to do well in countries where the show doesn't play. I think the MLP movie will do fine. It's low budget first of all (figure a few million dollars at most-I can't see them needing to spend more than a few million on animation plus while they have some names voicing they're not -expensive- names). I wouldn't put their budget past ten million if that. They'll make that back opening day.

      Delete
    6. I thought a few million dollars was decent budget, but I might be wrong...

I hope that the film will do good here too, just wondering though...is it coming before or after season 7?

  9. How about we all take a deep breath and calm the fuck down. Maybe even grow up a little. If the movie is legitimately a flop, it's not going to be because of furries or this cat. It's going to be because a bunch of retards think >nohooves is more important than a story.

And Mitch Larson and Amy Keating Rogers were not bullied by anyone. Amy got a better paying job at Disney and Mitch moved on to do other projects he wanted to do. Some of you retards need to come up for air once in a while.

    1. You're right, that's a thing I hate about bronies, though I'm not a furry myself, they go around complaining and whining how "furries = enemy fandom" when ironically the "enemy" is a far better fandom than they are. That's the problem with them, they're so arrogant, thinking their fandom/show is the best one ever and it's so annoying...

One thing I think that could happen if it flops at the box office MLP: FiM as a fad could be over afterward (from what I've seen of recent seasons it's like Hasbro is just desperate for money)...

      Delete
    2. Wait, so if the movie flops it will be the bronies' fault and not be because the movie itself was bad?

How the fuck can you even arrive at that conclussion?

      Delete
    3. Already raised this in your other comment, but again - you're describing the furry fandom, not the brony fandom. http://forums.furaffinity.net/threads/obligatory-banner-thread-denial-is-magic.107470/

  10. I'm not talking about the bronies when I was mentioning about the movie flopping, I was more talking about two things in my opinion, sorry if I lost ya.

What I meant is, yes, if the movie was bad it could be because of it being bad or bad marketing or something (sometimes great films can flop at the box office) and to me the quality of the show has been going downhill big time, seasons 5 and 6 sucked because it looks like Hasbro didn't even care about the quality of them, season 5 was mediocre and season 6 was just bad, considering they were just recycling ideas badly, the fact they did stupid decisions in certain episodes (season 6's finales) which obviously seemed to be for commercial reasons, and the whole "Exploring Equestria" theme was false advertising (they didn't say it was the theme of the toys, they said it would be the theme of Season 6, which made me think they'd be exploring new places but we just spent too much time in Manehattan [on a side note, the whole modern day technology thing takes away from MLP's charm as I liked it being in a fairy tale fantasy world], and we only saw stuff like the Crystal Empire, Chrysalis' castle and that quest thing that was in season 6 episode 13).

    Sorry if I confused you.

    2. I do feel that depending on how aware parents are of the fandom that they may not opt to see the movie if they don't want to expose their children to a bunch of grown men. I never did go to the theatrical releases of Equestria Girls but that was a consensus that I read somewhere (how accurate I couldn't tell you).

Modern technology in the show has existed as early as Season 2 (Read it and Weep). This is more of a generic remark but the immersion in a different universe is ruined when modern life is thrown into it.

      Delete
    3. That could happen.

To be honest I actually now don't mind the whole modern technology thing in FiM, I do like how even though Equestria is a fantasy in ways it's not much different from out world.
