By now, we've become quite accustomed to the laziness of IDW comics. USUALLY the laziness is in the writing, when they decide to completely ignore (or completely copy) the show's canon for their stories. This time is a little different.
Today, anons reading the new release of Friends Forever #22 noticed a very out-of-place art style in a conspicuous location of the final frame of the comic.
It appears that the artist opted to use clipart from the first results of Google Images for one of the character's cutie marks.
Here's what the images look like when placed directly next to each other.
We're no forensic scientists but we don't think you even have to yell "enhance" at the computer to see that's a match.
Now, while this is definitely a new level of unnecessary lazy for IDW, interestingly it may also be a violation of the clipart website's terms.
under this license you may not:
- modify or copy the materials;
- use the materials for any commercial purpose, or for any public display (commercial or non-commercial);
Interesting.....
We'll be sending clipartpanda some questions.

Deletedid it. You finally became a tiny inconvenience to HN's regulars. Although it takes you more time to copy and paste your messages than it does to just scroll past. You'll never waste people's time more than you waste your own, you waste of time.

Capper, ask them if they think it's fair that fan artists that put effort in are overlooked while this happens from paid contract staff. From experienced artists, no less.
ReplyDeleteAsk the artist! Ask Curnow!
Though given his statement recently that "the artist is more important than you" to the writers, he's probably okay with that, as he certainly doesn't hold writers in much esteem if this is more important to him.
To be fair he may have not seen this. You do overlook little bits as an Editor now and then.
You should piece other bits like this together in articles, from other articles.
Put that cat amongst dem pigeons my captain!
He'd never do that.
DeleteBad PR image is the last thing he wants.
He's going to deny that he's not affected by bad PR, but he will not do things that will give him a bad PR.
Who are you referring to? Surely Curnow and not Capper?
DeleteShome mishtake, shurely?
http://boards.4chan.org/mlp/thread/25325129/friends-forever-22-storytime
ReplyDeleteHoly shit that art is new levels of ugly.
DeleteI usually enjoy his ar style, but this one is off putting
DeleteThis has to be a joke. No artist would be that fucking lazy, right?
ReplyDeleteI saw the thread and stand corrected. That art is horrid.
DeleteEven looking past the art, this is atrocious even for friends forever standards. That cake's design is ridiculous, Luna's reaction to it even more so, the pointless Twilight cameo, Pinkie's apparent performance anxiety, Celestia's relative absence. But I have to say, the GIS approach to cutie marks really takes the cake, pun intended.
ReplyDeleteGIS?
DeleteGoogle Image Search
DeleteCelestia's not even in this issue? Geez, do the writers know ANYTHING to do with her?
DeleteWait people still care about the IDW comics? Between Anderson-gate, the lack of being able to speak as human beings on the official forums, the terrible editing of the damn comic from Cunrow and the general decline of quality since the first (fairly decent) year or so I think this is hardly surprising
ReplyDeleteI still read them, but with each new issue I care less and less. How did the MLP comics get stuck with some of the shittiest writers and (now) artists? Or maybe not shitty, just lazy and entitled.
DeleteCompared to say the Adventure Time comic which is currently on issue 44 (I think), and while it's had its ups and downs, it's been consistently entertaining for the last three and a half years. MLP on the other hand reached that "ups and downs" phase in about 6-8 months and now, maybe 1 in 4 issues isn't shit. I don't read any other IDW comics so maybe they just get shitty writers in general? And KaBOOM actually gets good writers? (It probably also helps that the AT comic had the same writer/artist team for the first three years or so, and recently switched to another writer/artist combo. The new writer is almost as good as the old one. The art is very similar. But yeah -- two writer/artist teams in 3.5 years, as opposed to the clusterfuck/circlejerk orgy of writers and artists that is the MLP comics)
I still read the comics regularly and enjoy the series overall, but I do find it difficult to get excited for them anymore. At best, I'm cautiously optimistic. I tend to enjoy Whitley's stories, Spike/Luna FF aside, but whether I'll like one of Cook's stories or not is a coin flip's chance, and I am automatically filled with a sense of dread and/or loathing whenever Fosgitt or Anderson's names turn up in a list of upcoming issues' credits. There's not giving a shit, and then there's those guys.
DeleteI dunno why. The recent arc by Whitley sucked; the best issues IMO were 1-4 and 17-20.
DeleteWhat kind of hack artist would resort to the Google image search and photoshop approach? What kind of "professional" would do this? How bad must your art be that you have to go and do something like—
ReplyDeleteOh, it's Fosgitt. Now it all makes sense.
Video didn't have the X-files theme playing, 0/10
ReplyDeleteIs... is this something people actually care about? Some clip art on a comic page? Really?
ReplyDeleteWell, put it this way. There's a bunch of talented fan-artists out there, who would kill for a chance to draw for something official. Those of whom would put their time, love, and couture into their art, and make it look as accurate as they can.
DeleteThen you have official IDW artists like Fosgitt, who doesn't bother to follow basic horse anatomy - hell, any kind of anatomy for that matter, and to add insult to injury, uses clip-art of all things for a ponies cutie mark. It is the epitome of laziness, and it's being used in an official comic.
It doesn't help the IDW comics have been steadily dropping in quality, but this just takes the cake. Pun intended.
Just pasting clipart into a comic is bad enough, but this is STOLEN clipart. IDW could face a lawsuit over this. And even if IDW is a total circlejerk, they still have to answer to Hasbro, and they aren't going to turn a blind eye to anyone causing them legal problems.
DeleteBest thing IDW can do is take of this as quickly and quietly as possible, and absolutely fucking not cause a scene.
Most of channers that read Horse News have no life ,think they can act as the Internet and/or comic police so.....no one in their right mind would pay attention for that except,as they used the term again and again so they deserve it,LE AUTISTS.This is just the latest in 4Chan campaign to nitpick every IDW move because they dont bend over and cave to every demand of the mob
DeleteAnd you want to be better than these no life channers?
DeleteThat only mean you are ranked way lower than them OOOH BUURN
Hey 09:20 is that you Ted Anderson? I mean you enough of a piece of shit that it wouldn't surprise me.
DeleteThat anon at 9:20 may be him, and oh, he had to be a fucking asshole and use autism as an insult too.
DeleteIt isn't even that hard drawing a cutie mark, what I often do is draw it once and then scale it down whenever I want to use it.
ReplyDeleteAnd that is wrong because.......?
ReplyDeleteSeriously idw just give credit or just draw your own whisk. the anonymous has noticed this laziness mistake and using clipart for a pony's cutie mark is just wrong at least give credit.
ReplyDeleteMy critique for this rant is that it's true, IDW searched for a clipart in the internet and pasted it in the comics for the chef in the last panel of one of the comics (what issue was that? also answer) and I pretty much know it. The uploader of the video in this has superimposed the black whisk clipart and it is having a super striking resemblance. THEY ACTUALLY USED IT. OH MY GOD, GIVE CREDIT OR DRAW ONE LIKE I SAID. /-_- Facepalm
Give this comment/critique comment thing/whatever you wanna call it a free internet if you agree.
I think Hasbro should just break up the partnership with IDW and just ally with a different company instead, their recent comics have been sucking. Also, Jay Fosgitt, who is one of the SHITTIEST MLP artists I've ever seen, should be fired IMO.
ReplyDeleteI think this is just an example of people who don't care about or understand the show ruining what was a great concept (a comic series based off of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic; the G1 My Little Pony comics, which are awesome, are far superior to the current comics)...if this keeps up, people are going to stop buying the comics. I dunno how the Guardians of Harmony comics will be...
(And to the anonymous person who is most likely a troll who replied on 6 November 2015 at 09:20, piss off. Don't use "autist" as a fucking insult, troll who's got nothing better to do with his/her life.)
