Hasbro reports 4th consecutive quarter of declines in Girl Toys profits


As a whole, Hasbro is doing well as a toy company, turning profits for shareholders on a regular basis. Boys products are posting growths, as are the Preschool categories and overall revenues are expanding. However there is really only one category any of us care about, which is the category of "Girls Products", which has just reported its 4th consecutive quarter of declines in revenue.

Why do we care about the "Girls Products" category you ask?
Well, you probably didn't actually ask that or else you'd be pretty damn stupid, considering where you are right now, but regardless; we care because it is the category that My Little Pony products are in.


Things aren't looking so great on that frontier.

The Financial Report from Hasbro reads this "The Girls category revenues declined 28% in the third quarter 2015 to $294.8 million. FURBY continued to drive this decline along with relatively smaller declines in Franchise Brand MY LITTLE PONY, and a decline in FURREAL FRIENDS." 

This represents a loss of nearly $113 Million compared to Q3 of 2014.

Over 9 months, the Girls Products category has lost $170.8 Million over the last 9 months, and an additional $36.4 Million dollars in the final Quarter of 2014.

In 12 months time, Girls Toys, including My Little Pony, have lost over $207 Million worth of revenue.

These losses of revenue are part of a continuing downward trend for the girls products category for Hasbro. These numbers, as reported from Hasbro, show the changes in revenue for the Girls category over the last 7 quarters.

Q1 2014 = +21%
Q2 2014 = +10%
Q3 2014 = +5%
Q4 2014 = -10%
Q1 2015 = -16%
Q2 2015 = -22%
Q3 2015 = -28%

As you can see, Girls Toys have had diminishing returns for nearly 2 years. Only recently however has My Little Pony been explicitly mentioned as being a contributing factor to the reductions.


Coincidentally, the last time that the Girls category posted increases, was when the HUB was on the air, instead of Discovery Family.

So what does this mean for pony? 

Well, it's hard to say.
Surely this, coupled with the continuing plummet in audience and ratings for the television show itself (Season 5 has consistently posted the lowest audience numbers since 2012) cannot be a GOOD indicator for the future of the franchise. But Season 6, the MLP Movie, and at least one more Equestria Girls property are already slated for release in the next few years, so we don't expect pony to be put out to pasture just yet.

That being said, it's time we all admit that the pony wave has crested, crashed, and is rolling back out to sea. When will the next wave hit?
Nobody knows for sure. But let's look out at the horizon as the sun sets shall we?

    I bought every toy in the Power Ponies line (including the $60 Fashion size set) as well as the entire Friendship is Magic line, even the freaking barn! DO MY EFFORTS COUNT FOR NOTHING?!?!?!!?

    Pony has been nonexistent at Hot Topic and Spencers for a long time now. Pony toys hardly exist in Walmart now, I actually have to search to find them there now (it's such a small area that they constantly move the section to make way for the other toys). Walmart has a horrible-looking pony bathroom set that seems to be online only. At TRU and Target, they are the same awful toys they've had forever. There was a real opportunity with the Sweet Apple Acres set, but they went cheap and flattened the barn, so I didn't end up buying anything. The EQG dolls scare me, but I'll probably buy the minis when they finally come out because they might have actually made a tiny effort on those.

    I wish they'd get rid of whoever has been running their toys into the ground for years, and put someone in who actually cares about making the products resemble the show. And ditch the stock vectors. I want to buy more pony merch, but it sucks, and has since the beginning.

    They've fucking asked for it. Their products are utter lazy trash. Its basically been the same shit on shelves for five years. With the exclusion of Disney Decendants and a few SW "6 Black Series and Marvel legends figures everything they produce is low grade. The Disney lines I bet have a level of decent quality due to Disney being on their case about it. Also, five fucking years, most toyetic franchises cycle out their shows and product lines between one to three years so they remain fresh to the target demographic. Hasbro fucking does this with Transformers for fuck's sake. G3 last seven and it basically gave the franchsie a bad reputation. Ben 10 fucked over with the third series and the fourth suffered for it, and that franchise lasted 8. You end a toyetic series before it or its products burn out.

    For what Hot Topic entails I think a lot of the merchandise they sold really didn't make a lot of sense. I do remember they could not at all sell the expensive Dr. Whooves and Derpy Christmas lights two years ago. Then again I did get all of my hoodies on clearance as well as the polo shirts so patience is a virtue.

    I don't remember who said this but there was a rather expensive and well made Transformers collection that no one bought because it was too expensive while a lot of people liked the cheap pony toys cause they were cheap. Heck they're so cheap now they're in stores in nothing but a plastic bag.

    The other major component, something I've learned and I won't shut up about, is that when competing against other companies copying what they do is very poor move. Instead of trying to secure a new market one is needlessly going against others which forces a more of a rude push than a welcoming pull.

    For some reason I do speculate that many bronies also don't have a lot of money so they save up for that one big thing, burn out, and go and do something else. Not sure if this is true, though.

    It should be noted that toy sales overall have been down across the board, Mattel has been having the same problems Hasbro is having; nowadays kids would rather have video games and iphones than plastic dolls.

However there is really only one category any of us care about, which is the category of "Girls Products", which has just reported its 4th consecutive quarter of declines in revenue.

    Why do we care about the "Girls Products" category you ask?
    Well, you probably didn't actually ask that or else you'd be pretty damn stupid, considering where you are right now, but regardless; we care because it is the category that My Little Pony products are in.


    Things aren't looking so great on that frontier.

    The Financial Report from Hasbro reads this "The Girls category revenues declined 28% in the third quarter 2015 to $294.8 million. FURBY continued to drive this decline along with relatively smaller declines in Franchise Brand MY LITTLE PONY, and a decline in FURREAL FRIENDS."

    This represents a loss of nearly $113 Million compared to Q3 of 2014.

    Over 9 months, the Girls Products category has lost $170.8 Million over the last 9 months, and an additional $36.4 Million dollars in the final Quarter of 2014.

    In 12 months time, Girls Toys, including My Little Pony, have lost over $207 Million worth of revenue.

    These losses of revenue are part of a continuing downward trend for the girls products category for Hasbro. These numbers, as reported from Hasbro, show the changes in revenue for the Girls category over the last 7 quarters.

    Q1 2014 = +21%
    Q2 2014 = +10%
    Q3 2014 = +5%
    Q4 2014 = -10%
    Q1 2015 = -16%
    Q2 2015 = -22%
