Horse News doesn't typically get into reviewing Brony Music. But apparently we don't have to.
The following comes to us from the Anonymous submit box, from a month ago, which apparently didn't reach us until now due to some sort of error. But the reviews don't change anyway so enjoy.
Semi-Livid:
The following is a collection of short reviews of various songs created by the fandom, written in the wake of a new thread, unedited for the most part. At best, they are well articulated nuggets of literary gold, displaying excellent brevity and wit. At worst, they're thoughtless, shitty, butthole-ish opinions. Note that later on I actually figure out what the fuck I'm doing. Enjoy.
>Pogosama - Everfree Compromise
5/10
Chill and simple, not my cup of tea though. Still pretty good, just a matter of taste, I think.
>Derpidety - Harmony (Return It)
8/10
>post-rock
YES.
>Derpidety - The Apple Orchard
9/10
>experimental
YESYESYESYESYES this is amazing. And he even says he takes from Toro y Moi, who is one of my favorite artists.
>donglekumquat - Parasprittin'
6/10
Nice electro house beat. I like.
>donglekumquat - Glide
8/10
Ho, snap. This is quality EDM here. Even has the sexy female vocals.
>Kreuhn Pony - Music with Different Parts
TEN OUT OF TEN
Take all of my YESs, just take 'em
>Kreuhn Pony - No. 15
9/10
Different change in tone, but it's still amazing.
>Laservega - Twilight's Quest
3/10
Ehh... nah. Kinda cheesy eurodance-y.
>PiercingSight - Magic (Harmony)
7/10
Grand classical piece.
>PiercingSight - Stargazer (Sparkle)
8/10
Beautiful song on piano.
>PrinceWhateverer - Rainbow Thrash (Revised)
linkinpark/10
Sounds exactly like Linkin Park. This could be good or bad, depending on personal preference.
>Celestia's Ballad (Flaedr Remix)
5/10
Beginning's fine, the bass sounds congested and the vocal splices odd though, honestly.
>dBPony - Make This Pony Mine
7/10
Nice upbeat rock-y song. This is enjoyable.
I really like his cover of Hearts Strong as Horses, too.
>Jackle App - I Love Everything
5/10
I wish he'd had put more time into it, it sounds really pretty and dreamy, but the quality of production itself is atrocious.
>Jackle App - Sweetiecut
7/10
This is actually pretty decent, vocal splices are pretty good, and the rest of the track supports it pretty well, and gives it a nice chill feel. EDM kicks feel out of place, though.
>Jackle App - Coolness that Defies Gravity
3/10
Sounds a bit... odd.
His collab with Mic the Mic isn't that good either, in my very honest opinion.
>Archie - Rainbow And Dash
5/10
It's nice, but not up to the caliber of electro house that I'd like.
>Archie - Magic Is Timeless (Club Mix)
7/10
This sounds exactly like Avicii. This could be good or bad, depending on personal preference.
His remixes are rockin' though.
>Aviators - Someone Like Me
7/10
Real good pop-y song.
>Aviators - Set Me Free
6/10
Suddenly, EDM. Not that that's necessarily bad, though. This is good, too.
>Aftermath - Prismatic
8/10
Hot dog, euphoria at 170 BPM.
>Seventh Element - Twilight Sparkle
8/10
Nice post-rock feel. I like it.
>Faceexplodie - Have Peace Again.
TEN OUTTA TEN
WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL MY LIFE? This is near SGaP tier.
>Faceexplodie - Doe Eyes
9/10
Real nice dream pop sound. This is good, too.
>L-Train - Moonrise
8/10
Wow, a 25 minute aural epic. It's beautiful. I can dig this.
>Caine - Sick of Partying
metal/10
This, not so much. Metal rarely finds its way into my listening, and this isn't an excuse to that. The above song is, though.
>oodorato2 - ウィキウィキポニー
TEN OUT OF TEN
This song sounds like the offspring of Pogo and jazz lovin' Japanese grill. This is awesome.
>oodorato2 - ポニーリミックス
TEN OUT OF TEEEN
Confirms my suspicions that this guy's awesome.
>oodorato2 - Pink Pinkie
TEN OUT OF TEEEEEN
Further confirms my suspicions that this guy's awesome.
>SoaringFlight - Above Cloudsdale
7/10
The guitar with the EDM-y backing track is nice, it's pretty decent.
>Abrante - May the Best Rap Win
5/10
Nice hip hop track.
>Chief Doggingfood 2x Pinkie Pie
confusedpenis/10
Like his name, this is weird, but kinda cute.
>You´ll Play Your Part (µThunder Remix)
4/10
Sounds like a hodgepodge of Vengeance sample packs and Nexus 2 synths, topped with those auto-tuned vocals, I don't quite like it.
>Griffinilla + Le Soldat Pony - Broken Horn
7/10
Very nice and calm folk-ish song. That harmonica and banjo.
>Le Soldat Pony - Fortuneteller
7/10
Traded in the acoustic instruments for some dreamy synths. This is nice too.
>M Pallante- Bad Babs Seed
5/10
It's so weird hearing a rock cover of a song from a little girl's show. Still decent rock, but I'm not a big fan of it.
>Respin - Rainboom Connection
9/10
I'm digging this. My head is bobbing as I type. Sounds like Pogo dipped in liquid magic.
>he only has one song
Why must this happen to me?
>Triple Blue Shell - What Friendship Could Be
TEN OUT OF THE TEN
YESYESYESYEYES contemporary jazz and well done vocal splices are my fetish.
>SlyphStorm - Sinking Ships
7/10
This is nice. Sounds very grand and energetic, with traces of EDM in there as well.
>H8_Seed - Hearstrings
6/10
Different, but decent. Those vocoder'd vocals.
>4everfreeborny - Here on the Moon
7/10
This is a cute song, that ukulele, yet it contrasts with a somewhat darker message. It communicates a blatantly carefree indifference in the face of what seems to be punishment. This is a pretty good song, noticeably well produced.
>FiMFlamFilosophy - Sinking Ships
cute/10
I don't think I should say anything about this. This is just a cute song for a cute video. But the vocals are hilariously bad, which is what he was aiming for, I'm sure. The backing tracks good, though, but quiet, which was also probably on purpose.
>FiMFlamFilosophy - Tubby Wubby Pony Waifu
Same comment here. That monkey.
>Feather - City Slicker
8/10
Groovy bass, slick piano, and gorgeous vocals? Yes, please.
>Replacer - Song for an Earth Pony
7/10
Vocals sound wonky, not that the guy doesn't have a good voice, but that the way it was recorded and mixed makes it sound strange. Other than that, it's a very nice song. There's a light-hearted yet heavy-hearted feeling to it, such as hope, and the sounds used to convey it does so quite well.
>Omnipony - Clouds
brostep/10
Enjoyable song along the lines of Skrillex, Zomboy, Kill the Noise, and the countless other bruhstep artists. Bass sounds a bit muffled, though.
>read description
>So if it feels a bit un-mastered or feels repetitive/rushed, feel free to blame the time it took to make.. 3 hours.
Bugger, what.
>read comments
>Omnipony is 14 years old?
Just, no, what? W-what, how? What?
I bet he uses loops. But, dang, I'm still envious of his skill.
>Futret - Cupcakes
disturbed/10
Sounds like Aphex Twin while he's high. And psychotic.
>Foozgoz - Twilight's Insanity
5/10
A watered down version of Venetian Snares, both in terms of music and production.
>Wootmaster - (The Ride Ain't) Over
2/10
The backing track's... decent, but he raps better than he sings, and that's not saying much. Every word he utters makes me cringe. And why is there a broken music box playing in the background?
>Among the Herd - What I'll Become
morelinkinpark/10
>Metal Core Pony - A Dash of Failure
moremetal/10
A reminder that this fandom is weird.
>Evening Star - Octavia
5/10
I wish it didn't sound like he was using VSTs, I feel that a little more automation would have helped a lot. It sounds kind of lifeless because of it. But that aside, if you can't hear it, then enjoy it.
TheDashDub is in the same ballpark, but I feel that it is more able to effect you emotionally, instead of just trying sounding like grand classical music like this song seem to be doing.
>Artem Yegorov - Nightfall in Ponyville
7/10
Sounds like a soundtrack, in a very good way.
>Nexgen - I'm Not Addicted
7/10
I'm not really into hip hop either, but I can dig this. The rapping's pretty decent, and the backing track supports it nicely. Bitchin', if that's what people who like this say.
>Radiarc - Amble
6/10
Light, gentle, delicate, but it feels like it's missing something, like fat-free milk.
>Radiarc - My Faithful Student
8/10
>read description
>What story do you hear?
Celestia lost her faithful student, Twilight, to the dastardly thing called death, and she's feeling the steadfast sorrow and the intermittent rage of it.
In other words, them feels.
>Dex Ford - MLP
trap/10
What the fuck? Ponies and trap don't mix well. This feels like a parody. But I feel like the whole genre of trap is a parody, so take that with a salt grain.
>Dex Ford - Singing Telegram
1/10
What the fuck? This sounds quite stupid.
>Dex Ford - So Many Cupcakes
4/10
This is better, but not by much.
>PinkiePieSwear - Trixie's Good Side
6/10
Don't get me wrong, I have mentioned that PinkiePieSwear's mighty fine, but his earlier work's not as good, in my opinion. Still a decent track, none the less.
>Depidety - Dash's Echoing Sky
8/10
Mhm.
>You're Got the Music (Foozgoz Delight Mix)
6/10
Somewhat decent attempt at complextro/mainstream house music. Nice happy tone.
>TripleBlueShell - Gonna Make You Smile (Smile Smile Smile Remix)
7/10
Jazzy, with a healthy dosage of Ponka pone vocals.
>TripleBlueShell - Art of the Dress (Reception Remix)
8/10
Better musically than the above song. It elaborates on its idea better, flows more easily, and has a lovely smooth feeling to it. It's a shame it got so many less views just because it doesn't have four Raritys on it.
>TripleBlueShell - E55
TEN OUT OF THE TEN
SGaP sans glitches, and it conveys the episode into musical terms so well, and do I need to mention how good the piano playing is? The piano playing is so good.
>Replacer - Imbecile
7/10
The Beatles comes to mind when I hear this. Somewhat down, but pretty good. I especially like the bridge/instrumental section.
>Replacer - Finding My Way (Back Home)
7/10
Same comment here, except more positive, and there's a rock solo for the bridge.
>TripleBlueShell - Octavia's Epiphany
5/10
Sounds a bit confused, and production-wise it's not good either. It's his (supposedly) first song though, so it doesn't mean too much.
>TripleBlueShell - Dreams (BBBFF Remix)
5/10
Mostly the same as his Smile Smile Smile remix, but it sounds a bit confused here, as well, the vocals splices sound downright silly at times, and the Braeburn sample was uncalled for. I'm not quite sure why there's a sudden lapse into classical at the end, either.
And I've already "reviewed" the song What Friendship Could Be, just ctrl+f the song in the thread.
>So Many Fluttershys (So Many Wonders Remix)
7/10
Back on track, the bass and piano go quite well together with the vocal splices, which are quite well placed. And that flute. Ooh, yeah, that flute.
>TripleBlueShell - Petal Blast
7/10
Saxophone dubstep? This is dangerous territory, but it's still good. Interesting musically, and it sounds full as well. The drop can sound a bit ridiculous, though. Vocal splices and piano are both done masterfully, following the trend set before.
>Cats Millionaire - The Ressurrection: 3D
7/10
Assault to the ears. Now if only her vocals could join in the fight, it sounds like she's trying to sing with feeling, but it's not working.
>Cat Milly vs. Renard - Art of the Dress Cover
8/10
Monotone vocals are glorious in this case. The percussion is very forceful, and the mix of chip tunes and IDM for the backing track add to its glory.
>Cats Millionaire - Pinkie's Brew
7/10
It's more chill here, but it's still quite nicely done. Nothing that screams, "I'M AWESOME," though.
>Cats Millionaire - Rarity Fighting a Giant Crab
4/10
Ridiculous vocals aside, the backing track is lacking. Also, the very low, distorted bass and the very high pitched leads leave something to be desired in the middle range.
>I don't "flipper" give a "ship"
Hue.
>SoGreatandPowerful + AndTheRainfall - Rarity
Upbeat dream pop with a little glitching for taste. I very much like. The Rarity clips are delightful, and SGaP's always beautiful vocals are the icing on the cake.
>Ernula x Cuilan - Pinkie's Brew (Industrialized Mix)
5/10
Eh, the sine wave lead rubs on my ears the wrong way. The attempts on sounding "industrialized" sound somewhat decent, though.
>4everfreebrony - Thought I'd Let You Know
6/10
Decent indie poppy song. Wish the guitar sounded louder and fuller, though. All together, not that interesting, but not offensive, either.
>Swagberg - Pony Swag
8/10
The name and beginning made me question the quality of the song incoming, but I was gladly told otherwise as the actual song began. The rapping's great, and the PinkiePieSwear sampled beat is tight.
>PrinceWhateverer - Persuing Fortune
evenmorelinkinpark/10
>Coconeru & Steven, A.D. - Tavi and Scratch (A Tropical Octav3)
2cute/10
Wouldn't put this on my Sansa Clip, but this is a cute song for a cute video. It's so adorable. SO ADORABLEEE
>Joaftheloaf - Swing Tavi Swing
5/10
Vocals are too loud and awkwardly mixed, and the drums too quiet. Other than that, it's a decent track. Nothing strikes me to play it again, though, but it may be because this kind of music isn't my fetish.
>all this raving in the comments
>he uses the colon d smiley five times in the description
I don't get people, sometimes.
>AwkwardMarina - Anthropology
3cute/10
Cute vocals, cute lyrics, cute video. It's even catchy, too.
Still bothers me how this whole headcanon came from Lyra just casually sitting on a park bench in an unorthodox manner. Bugger this fandom.
>Ponky and Eccentrifuge - Bright Eyes (A Wonky Anthem)
7/10
More poppy music, but this has some weight to it. The backing track is substantial, musically, and the redhead's vocals are pure homo sex. So homo. The quality of production is quite good, too, a breath of fresh air.
>DerpyCrash ft PegaSix - Alight
6/10
Decent drum and bass. It doesn't get my attention, however, although I do like the addition of the grungey guitar and wispy piano, as well as the neat-o vocal splices. I'm not quite a fan of liquid drum and bass, I prefer my 160 BPM music to hit harder than that. Personal preference, subjectivity, ect.
>AdamTh3Walker - Geologist
8/10
Gentle, but this time it's for a very good reason. Holds a lot of emotion in it, and the electronic drum kit adds to the atmosphere quite well.
>Eurobeat Brony - Batty (ft. Odyssey)
eurobeat/10
I'm not a fan of eurobeat. It sounds cheesy in my opinion, and this is no exception.
Oh, the vocoder vocals just came on. Let's move on.
>Freewave - Pino Colada
jamaica/10
Hahahahano
I don't like Freewave. In my opinion, even though he does a lot of different genres, he sucks at them all. If only he could just stick to one genre, and perfect it, he'd save us from all this crap. BUT OPINIONS
>Zatslol - Welcome Ponyvillians
6/10
Same comment as Joaftheloaf's song, except this is produced with more skill. Sill sounds a bit bland, to me, but I'm betting it's because of the kind of music this is.
What genre is this song in, anyway?
>AwkwardMarina - Sombra's Door
4/10
Cheesy, again. Personal opinion, again.
>AwkwardMarina - Entropy (Sim Gretina Remix)
7/10
Oh, yes. Yes. When that electro house bass kicked in, I quite literally twerked in my seat. The vocals are so sassy, too, adds a lot of personality to it. Quite upbeat, quite enjoyable.
>SoGreatandPowerful
LE TEN OUT OF THEN
Otherworldly, in one word, and in every good definition of the word. Glitches and chills lie ahead, as well.
Damn right SoGreatAndPowerful is 10/10
ReplyDeleteSomeone should make a YT Playlist out of this.
ReplyDeleteNope, not me. I'm definitely too lazy
I would appreciate this. I don't know 80% of these songs. If /mlp/ says they're good, it must be true!
Deletehttp://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLKCn3X21eVY0PWXJXQG0LKO7RiSvQvrbg
DeleteThis includes every song listed in the article in the order listed (some not may be the same version or whatever and I may have missed one or two but whatever). Also tacked on a few songs I enjoy and a few that I don't even remember but apparently found worth adding to a different playlist because why not.
SoGreatAndPowerful removed all of their videos from their youtube account but they can all be found here still, and are available for download: http://sogreatandpowerful.com/
Thx
DeleteStopped reading at "SGaP tier". Only song from him I really like is "Pinkie Pie Swear".
ReplyDeleteI have no idea why so many people like SGaP. I didn't enjoy anything he did, personally.
ReplyDeleteIt's almost like... oh my god, it's almost like that depends on personal preference!
DeleteAgreed. For some reason /mlp/ just has a huge boner for him.
DeleteIt's a love it/hate it thing, but usually if you don't love it, your music taste is trash.
DeleteI posted this in the chat....

#uptodate
Music being much more subjective than most other art forms, I could never review it the way I'd review a TV show or book. That said, I think this guy has some pretty good taste, and I can agree with most of it, although I think I like 4everfreebrony and AwkwardMarina a lot more than he does. Zatslol too, who also did another song I really liked called "Winter".
ReplyDeleteAlthough, these days, I think my favourite fandom musicians are AndTheRainfall and SlyphStorm, who are both good in very different ways.
Re ">all this raving in the comments" in Swing! Tavi, Swing!:
ReplyDeleteThat song was written quite a long time ago ("a long time ago" being a relative term in the brony fandom). Back when it was released it was considered amazing, incredible, etc., whereas these days, compared to some of the stuff being put out by the fandom, it sounds quite dated.
Don't get me wrong, it's still a kickass song imo; love the rhythm, it's so damn *beaty*, but yeah, given the kind of music the fandom is used to these days, the mixing and VST quality definitely leaves much to be said. To be honest I'd love to hear a remastered version.
>rating some dubstep shit higher than Replacer
ReplyDeleteShit taste, no respect.
Sogreatandpowerful is too op. { } outta 10
ReplyDeleteWhere the fuck is SMOR3S - Viridian on this list?
ReplyDeleteCan't say I much enjoyed it myself but I added it to the playlist I linked above anyway.
DeleteHappy now?
Nostalgia trippin bruh'
ReplyDeleteNo Ghelded Kultz? Disappoint.
ReplyDeleteThis x10. Also needs Tarby.
DeleteNot enough SGaP.
ReplyDeleteI think the first Dex Ford track is intentionally crappy, could be wrong
